IS WORK MAKING YOU SICK?
Is work making you sick?
On our way to work we touch numerous shared surfaces; from lift buttons to handrails and cash machines to door handles. Our hands inadvertently come into indirect contact with thousands of other hands, and the bacteria they carry, every morning. But do we actually take measures to ensure that the germs we pick up dont reach the workplace? Unfortunately not, according to a new YouGov survey carried out on behalf of Durable UK for Computer Cleaning Week 2008.
Findings reveal that two thirds of us rightly consider our hands to be the dirtiest parts of our exposed body, yet only 8% of full time workers wash them when they arrive at work in the morning. Almost half switch on their computers before doing anything else in the mornings, spreading the bacteria collected during the commute to work. An astonishing 50% of full time workers clean their hands four times or less during an average working day, whereas experts recommend a minimum of ten washes for optimum health.
The study also found that women are generally more knowledgeable about contagious viruses such as E-coli, MRSA and Salmonella, but that shockingly female full time workers are more keen to switch on their computers before washing their hands 55% of female respondents claim they power up before cleaning up, compared to 42% of men.
