THE UKOS CARBON CLUB
Reducing The UKOS Carbon Footprint

UKOS boss Ian Haywood is not a man to do things by half.
Whilst many Managing Directors are happy to talk a good game when it comes to climate change and the need to reduce C02 emissions, Ian and his family are actually leading the charge to reduce their carbon footprints and are encouraging work colleagues, suppliers, customers, friends and family to follow suit.
"Becoming an organisation which is aware and respectful of the impact it’s operations can have on the environment has been a priority for UKOS for a number of years", Ian explained, but as the person at the head of the company, I understand the need to demonstrate small changes can have big consequences."
"Simply by turning the central heating and hot water down by 1 or 2 degrees we can make huge inroads and we are now fanatical about turning off lights, the television, the PC etc" Ian recounted at the launch of The UKOS Carbon Club.
Introducing The UKOS Carbon Club
"The UKOS Carbon Club is an entirely voluntary scheme which seeks to provide all UKOS employees, suppliers, customers, friends and family with the necessary information and resources to make a difference through simple actions. The club offers the chance to register the steps an individual, family or other group intend to take in order to reduce their carbon footprint both at work and home.”
“For example last year UKOS used over 10,000 cardboard boxes to deliver goods to customers. By simply switching to reusable plastic tote boxes our goal is to reduce this figure to significantly and in the process eliminate unnecessary CO2 emissions."
“Likewise simply collecting the rainfall which passes through your guttering and storing it in buttresses for use in the garden can potentially save 50% of domestic water consumption – a huge result from the most simple of actions.”
UKOS expects to achieve ISO 14001 accreditation in 2007 which will be an externally audited demonstration of it’s commitment to both the environment and the communities in which it operates.
The Final Word
"Will I notice that the shower is a few degrees colder in the morning" concluded Haywood, "almost certainly not, but if the experts are right and our climate increases in temperature by a couple of degrees it will be our children’s children who will be paying the price of our environmental mismanagement."
